Rage Against The Machine was born in 1991 in Los Angeles. The first concert took place in the lounge, in the house of a friend during a party. From that moment they began to perform in different places and were consolidating a faithful and unconditional public. In November 1992 they edited the first album "Rage Against The Machine" Epic.

Today, we could write an essay of uncountable pages, in order to explain the meaning (if there is one) of the names and the musical band. If a studio of this type was existing, Rage Against The Machine would occupy a very important place.

"The Rage, according to the definition, is a sentiment of  violent and uncontrolled hate. Rage grows up fed by the Machine and it provokes that the people perform. The Machine, is obviously the metaphor of the system, our governments, our politicians, our economy, the ones who control and dominate the society of our epoch. The Machine is the oppression of people in any part of the planet, Mexico, China, USA, etc.”

“The Machine are the politicians who take away the town from the power and keep the poor in the misery and give the security that the riches enjoy their richness. The combustible which moves the Machine is money.  The Machine is brainwashing people through the control they have on the media's, which provoked that people think that the Machine is the only way of living or surviving".

"Rage Against The Machine is a movement of people all over the world who try to put pressure on the governments, business and institutions to avoid that they check our lives. Rage Against The Machine has much to do with open people to new ideas and positions to fight for a best future and for humanity".

Definitely, the number of the band is a declaration of principles. But there aren't only words.... RATM gives free rain to all type of actions to reaffirm the message. The anecdote which they played in the main part in the Festival of Lollapalooza in 1993.

To protest for the lack of liberty and expression and against the PMRC ( An American association of musical censure presided by the wife of the vice-president Al Gore), the components of the band appeared in the stage completely naked and with the mouth gagged with adhesive. During 14 minutes they stayed on the stage accompanied only by the feedback of the guitars. Days later they offered a free concert to satisfy the fans and to compensate them for their comprehension.

Any person who listen to a disk of the band for the first time, earlier or later thinks about the same question: Do they really do all the sound themselves without using any samplers, and broadcast live ?

The answer is yes, and they are happy to generate all these musical sounds by themselves. They aren't against using new technologies to create music and as the guitarist Tim Morello commented in several occasions that he is interested in industrial music, or that the main influence of Zack are the hip-hop and groups as Public Enemy.

Rage Against The Machine is born from the merging of its member's taste: the epic guitar belonging to groups like Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath united with strength and richness of messages of Public Enemy. RATM converted themselves into an extraordinary punk-rock band and politicise rap.

Other bands which have affinity for the sound RATM are Beastie Boys and 311.

The burning monk on the cover of Rage Against The Machine is Thich Quang Duc, an elderly Buddhist monk, immolating himself on a main intersection in Saigon, Vietnam on June 11, 1963 to protest the rule of Ngo Dinh Diem, the American backed leader of Vietnam. This action  was witnessed and filmed by many members of the American media and led to the end of the Diem rule in Vietnam.

This photo won the 1963 Pulitzer Prize.

311 has a strong pop load which differentiate them from Rage, even if they are alike. You'll have the opportunity to check it by yourself, as the 311 will also participate to the Doctor Music Festival 97.

Zack de La Rocha, leader and singer of the band is the principal guilty of the incendiary charge of the letters of his songs nation in 1971 in Long Beach and his ancestry is "Chicano". Before RATM, Zack was singing in Inside Out and was playing the guitar in a band called Hardstance. In addition, he writes poems and organises social projects for the community where he lives.

Tommy Morello was born in New York in 1964, even if he grew up in a suburb of Chicago. His father was a member of the guerrillas Mau Mau (Kenya). Tom graduated in Harvard in 1986, with a honorary mention in policy science. Before joining Rage Against The Machine, Tom was playing in a band of Los Angeles called Lock Up, which edited an album for Geffen.  His main guitar influence has been Jimmy Page and also Black Sabbath.

Tom Morello is one of these guitarists who mark an epoch and provokes that thousand of young people get close to a guitar with the best intentions, even if in the end they provoke the anger of their neighbours.

Tim Commerford is the bass player. He is very closed to Zack and know each other since their childhood. De La Roche encouraged him to play the bass. As Brad Wilk, drum of RATM, he is in the band for the music and for educational reasons. He also writes poems and loves jazz music.

Brad Wilk admits being in the band basically for musical reasons. He doesn't look politically active as his friends. He admits that Rage is a politic band and increasing people awareness is important but as says Brad "sometimes people need amusement ... and we give it".
